Abstract

Obesity is a multifactorial and complex health problem influenced by genetic, environmental, social, behavioural, and biological factors. Although environmental and behavioural contributors such as sedentary lifestyle, high-calorie intake, and inadequate energy expenditure are widely acknowledged, the role of genetic inheritance remains indisputable.

This study aims to investigate the effects of inheritance on obesity and to examine how understanding and identifying genetic causes may benefit the treatment and prevention of the obesity epidemic. With the emergence of genome-wide association studies (GWAS), the relationship between common gene variants and obesity has been increasingly explored.

Genetic mutations and gene deficiencies, particularly MC4R deficiency, are significant contributing factors. The identification of genes associated with obesity susceptibility may offer new possibilities for the prevention and treatment of obesity.
