2024 Sino-UK Bilateral Symposium on Healthy Design

On December 3, 2024, the 2024 Sino-UK Bilateral Symposium on Healthy Design was successfully held in Beijing, which was hosted by the Beijing Institute of Technology (BIT) and the University of Edinburgh (UoE), and supported by Hualin Wells Publishing Group. Mr. Zheng Jinbiao, Chairman of the Group, attended the opening ceremony of the event, where he formally presented the appointment letters to the editor-in-chief and members of the editorial board of The International Journal of Healthy Space. The guests included experts and scholars from renowned universities both at home and abroad, specializing in the research of urban design, environmental design, product design, collaborative design and geography. Notable attendees included Yang Fan, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of the Beijing Institute of Technology; Prof. Juan Cruz, Principal of Edinburgh College of Art, University of Edinburgh; Prof. Simon Bell, British Director of BIT-UoE Joint Laboratory of Healthy Spaces and professor of the University of Edinburgh; Prof. Zhuang Weimin, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and Professor of Tsinghua University; Wang Ying, Head of the Department of International Exchange and Cooperation, the Beijing Institute of Technology; Sun Ziwen, Assistant to the Dean of the School of Design and Arts, the Beijing Institute of Technology, and Chinese Director of BIT-UoE Joint Laboratory of Healthy Spaces; Prof. Robert Schmidt-III, Loughborough University; Wang Xiaoyong, Vice Dean of the Graduate School, the Beijing Institute of Technology; Prof. Fang Xiaofeng, Vice Dean of the Academy of Arts and Design of Tsinghua University and Editor-in-Chief of ZHUANGSHI Magazine; Prof. Liang Sisi, Tsinghua University; Prof. Ding Yuan, Central Academy of Fine Arts; Prof. Li Yu, Beijing University of Civil Engineering and Architecture; Prof. Leng Hong, Harbin Institute of Technology; and Prof. Xie Hui, Chongqing University, among others. The opening ceremony was hosted by Yao Jian, Associate Dean of the School of Design and Arts at the Beijing Institute of Technology and Professor-in-Charge of BIT-UoE Joint Laboratory of Healthy Spaces.

At the opening ceremony, Mr. Yang Fan, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of the Beijing Institute of Technology, delivered a speech on behalf of the institute, expressing his sincere welcome to all the leaders, experts and scholars who took the time to attend the conference. Yang Fan said that this conference would focus on the goal of “creating a healthier living environment for the public”, facilitating the exchange of the latest research results and future directions, strengthening collaboration among international cross-disciplinary experts, and promoting the multi-dimensional development of healthy design theory and practice.

Prof. Juan Cruz, Principal of Edinburgh College of Art at the University of Edinburgh, delivered a speech, in which he highlighted the University of Edinburgh’s significant achievements in training professional talent and advancing research on healthy spaces. He said this conference would further promote the cooperation and communication between the Beijing Institute of Technology and the University of Edinburgh, and emphasized his expectation for continued, in-depth cooperation in the future.

At the Parallel Session I, Prof. Simon Bell from the University of Edinburgh delivered a speech on the theme of “The Role of Landscape in Supporting Human Health and Wellbeing: What is This and How Does it Work,” highlighting the importance of landscape design. Prof. Robert Schmidt-III from Loughborough University presented the research findings of “Neuroarchitecture: A New Transdisciplinary Scape”. Prof. Liang Sisi from Tsinghua University shared her research titled “Technological Spatial Intervention Strategies in Urban Regeneration and Design Practices”.

At the Parallel Session II, Academician Zhuang Weimin of Tsinghua University analyzed in detail the current research results of healthy space in his report “Programming and POE of Healthy Space”; Prof. Fang Xiaofeng of Tsinghua University presented a report entitled “Pan-Healthy Design Concepts in Highly Artificial Environments”; Prof. Leng Hong of Harbin Institute of Technology delivered a thematic report entitled “Resident Health and Public Spaces under Climate Impact”.

The 2024 Sino-UK Bilateral Symposium on Healthy Design is an academic event focusing on the research of healthy design at home and abroad. The conference builds a platform for academic exchanges and mutual recognition of achievements, showcases the latest research in international healthy design and related fields, promotes the cross-fertilization and innovation of design disciplines, and injects new vitality into the construction and updating of healthy spaces around the world. Meanwhile, the launch of The International Journal of Healthy Space helps Hualin Wells Publishing Group to build an academic hub in the field of healthy space, reflecting the Group’s active response to the Outline of Healthy China 2030.
